So recently I was reading some news online and I've been hearing a lot about conserving energy. i have always had a concern for the environment (probably due to the fact that I take an environmental course) and found that alternative methods of charging gadgets (mainly phones) are really cool and interesting. The first thing I found was a phone that charges by means of Coca Cola! The inventor designer Daizi Zheng says of his design, "The concept is using bio battery to replace the traditional battery to create a pollution free environment. Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out." I found this extremely innovative, but doubt any phone companies will be adapting it soon. In quite a contrary note, solar powered phones, which we have spoken about quite a bit recently in class, are everywhere. Solar powered phones are definitely the future in my eyes... as long as the future is not taking place in my current cloudy city. I was thinking that getting a solar powered phone could be great for the summers I spend almost entirely on the beach. I never bring my cell phone with me to the sand and surf during my summers in Italy, and some nights my friends and I stay on the beach until late (up until its about 9pm). This, yes I admit it, is quite a beach bum way to live, and often times when I get home my mother is screaming at me with concern that I had been "abducted." Of course this never happens, but a mother is a mother and her concerns are justified. With the good prices of these new solar phones, I can bring it to the beach without worrying about killing it in the ocean... unlike the situation I currently have when I bring my Blackberry to the beach. In addition, I wont ever have to worry about loosing charge. The sun in the south of Italy is more than sufficient to keep my phone charged. Investing in one of these solar phone is looking very appealing to both me and my mother.

This idea of a phone being charged with a Coca Cola battery is quite interesting, though I am not sure of how practical it is. I don't drink coke, but if I did I would surely rather drink it than pour it down a battery. I do agree, though, that the solar powered mobile phone is the phone of the future.
